New Zealand’s border is more than a checkpoint. It is the first friendly face, and the first impression of a country known for its warmth, and stunning landscapes. Behind that first welcome is Immigration New Zealand (INZ), working around the clock to ensure each arrival is smooth, secure, and aligned with New Zealand’s immigration standards.

What Happens at the Border

At every international airport, INZ officers are present to manage arrivals. Their role includes checking visas and travel documents for all travellers, whether tourists, business visitors, or returning residents. They assess health and character considerations through biometric checks and background screening. They also support customs and biosecurity agencies to protect New Zealand from potential threats. INZ officers are available to assist with visa questions and re-entry support, helping ensure every traveller receives the right guidance from the moment they land.

The New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD)

Before arriving in the country, travellers must complete the New Zealand Traveller Declaration. This digital form has replaced the traditional paper arrival card and simplifies the process at the border. All air travellers, including citizens, residents, and international visitors, are required to submit the NZTD within 24 hours before their flight.

The NZTD collects important information such as personal details, travel history, health declarations, and any customs or biosecurity disclosures. It is free to complete, easy to access online or through the NZTD app, and helps streamline the arrival process.

Border authorities use the declaration to assess potential health and security risks in advance. It allows for quicker processing at the airport and helps create a more efficient arrival experience. Travellers who do not complete the NZTD in time may experience delays, so it is a crucial step in preparing for entry.

Smart Technology for Faster Entry

Most major New Zealand airports are equipped with SmartGate technology for eligible travellers. These eGates use facial recognition to match a traveller’s identity with their passport, allowing for a faster and more automated entry. Travellers holding New Zealand or Australian passports, or those from visa waiver countries, can often use SmartGate for quicker processing if their NZTD has already been submitted.

Health and Border Readiness

Health continues to be a priority at the border. INZ works closely with the Ministry of Health to monitor global developments and enforce health measures when required. Depending on current regulations, travellers may be asked to provide vaccination records or proof of travel insurance. The NZTD helps gather this information ahead of arrival to support a smooth entry.

Balancing Safety and Hospitality

Immigration New Zealand strives to balance strong compliance with genuine hospitality. While ensuring that legal and safety standards are met, INZ also focuses on creating a respectful and welcoming experience for every traveller. Whether you are coming to explore, study, work, or reunite with family, INZ plays a vital role in making your arrival in New Zealand smooth and supported.

To ensure a hassle-free journey, complete your New Zealand Traveller Declaration online at travellerdeclaration.govt.nz at least 24 hours before you travel.
