The New Zealand government has announced an increase in the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) from $35 NZD to $100 NZD per visitor starting October 1, 2024. This decision, revealed by Minister for Tourism and Hospitality Matt Doocey, ensures that visitors contribute to the costs associated with maintaining the natural beauty and infrastructure that make New Zealand a sought-after destination.

The IVL, introduced in 2019, was designed to address the financial pressures that international tourism places on local infrastructure and conservation efforts. With international tourists spending over $11 billion in New Zealand last year, it is evident that the sector plays a crucial role in the nation’s economy. The increased levy will directly support high-value conservation projects and enhance visitor experiences. Funds collected through the IVL will contribute to maintaining biodiversity in national parks and other popular areas, as well as improving amenities and services on public conservation land.
